Cryptids that went from Myth to Real Once thought to be myth, These creatures turned out to be real! Black Panther Did you know Black Panthers were once considered a cryptid? It wasn’t until 2018, when a photo of a black leopard was captured in Kenya that they were actually proven to exist. Bornean Bay Cat In 1992, there was a rare small breed of cat that was discovered in Bornean Baby that was once thought to be a myth. Coelacanth This fish was thought to be extinct until in 1938, when a fisherman off the coast of South Africa caught one! Giant Armadillo Folklore started in the 1800's that there was a large armadillo but was mostly believed to be a myth until in the 1970's a large 130 pound armadillo was found in South America. Yeti Abominable Snowman The Yeti is an ape-like creature that has been sighted in the Himalayan mountain range in Asia. It is said to live in ice caves and in snowy areas. Some believe it is a species of Bigfoot that just lives in cooler climates. It is said to be a furry creature that resembles a Sasquatch. Some scientists believe the Yeti might really be a Gigantopithecus, a prehistoric ape that lived in Asia three hundred thousand years ago. Himalayan folklore says the Yeti is a spirit animal that either brings luck to hunters or warns them they are traveling too deep into mountain territory. Others believe it is just folklore or misidentified Himalayan bears. Questions to Ponder Is the Yeti a relative of Bigfoot? Is it a real animal, spirit animal or a figment of our imagination?

Yowie

  Yowie Quinkin, Joogabinna, Yahoo or Ghindaring In Aboriginal folklore, this is an entity that lives in the Australian Outback. The Yowie is said to be Bipedal. People have said it’s hairy, and ape-like. Facts & Trivia The most sightings have been recorded in eastern Australian states. Witnesses claim them to be between 6 - 11 feet tall. Some people describe it as looking like a hairy-man but with bat-like ears. The most sightings of Yowies come from Queensland but they are reported in every mainland state of Australia. Reports of Yowies go back to the 1800's. Questions to Ponder Every country seems to have a Bigfoot-like animal. Is this Australia’s?

Wendigo

Wendigo Winter Entity From the folklore of tribes in North America, the Wendigo is a humanoid-like evil spirit that likes to possess human beings and turn them into cannibals. It is said to be super tall, gaunt and look emaciated and shifts between looking human to looking like a human with a stag head. Facts & Trivia Some Indigenous people thought that the Wendigo was a sign of people’s selfishness and greed. Many mental illnesses were blamed on a person being possessed by a Wendigo. A person was said to turn in to a Wendigo by doing bad things, being cursed by a Shaman or by dreaming about it. Wendigos were first written about in the 1600's. The Algonquian speaking people believed that eating fatty meat could cure one of being a Wendigo.

Sky Rods

Sky Rods Air Rods or Solar Entities People who are into UFOlogy and cryptozoology are often interested in sky rods. Sky Rods look like how their name sounds, a long cylinder, sometimes with spirals on it, that fly through the air. They are often caught in photographs and videos but not seen with the naked eye. Some entomologists who have studied images of Sky Rods believe that these rods are insects moving across the frame as the photo is being captured, They believe the spiral around the rods is just how the camera’s shutter catches their wings. Others who study these believe they are some type of living entity that just can’t be seen with the naked eye, while others believe it is a paranormal spirit of some sort. What Do You Think? Are Sky Rods just insects caught flying quickly on camera? Are they possibly a supernatural being or alien energy?

Skin Walker

Skin Walker Shapeshifter Oryee Naaldlooshii he Navajo’s folklore believe this to be an evil entity, spirit or witch that likes to confuse humans by shapeshifting into animals. Beliefs are that people turn into a a Skin Walker as a curse for doing something really bad such as killing someone. Many times a big dog, wolf or other wild animal will appear and disappear leaving one with creepy feelings. They trick humans by mimicking their voices. For example, if you are walking in the woods and hear a familiar voice calling help or your name, don’t follow that voice. Run home! Facts & Trivia Sometimes Wendigo, Skin Walker and Shape Shifters are all used interchangeably. Navajo people will seldom talk about Skin Walkers, especially outside of their own community for fear that talking about it will bring it forth. Ropen

  Ropen Demon Flyer A bat-like creature that has been sighted in New Guinea. The Ropen is said to be fly like a bird, have bat-like wings, a long beak filled with teeth and a 30' wing span. It is said to have bioluminescent lights on it to help it attract fish at night for feeding. Some people believe it is a supernatural bird while others believe that it is a bat, or a pterosaur, which is an extinct flying reptile. Questions to Ponder Is the Ropen a real bird from prehistoric times, a spirit-bird or just folklore. Is it possible that pterosaur have survived and possibly living deep in caves and once in awhile one makes it way out where people witness it? Can these Ropens be responsible for so many missing people in state parks?

Mothman

Mothman  The first newspaper report about Mothman was published in the Point Pleasant Register on November 16, 1966. A couple reported seeing a part owl-like and part humanoid creature. They said it was standing at the side of the road near the site of a former World War II munitions plant. Soon after this story was reported, there were multiple reports of this creature. The Mothman is said to be about 10 feet tall, with red glowing eyes and bat or owl like wings. This creature is said to appear right before a tradegy unfolds, such as the Silver Bridge collapse on December 15, 1967. Mongolian Death Worm

  Mongolian Death Worm Allghoi or Olgoi-khorkhoi It is said to be a reddish 2 - 5 foot long worm with a red mouth. Folklore says it lives under the sand in the Gobi desert, and will come out to kill it’s prey with it’s poisonous spit. Some witnesses have said that the worm will spit at you. Once the spit touches the victim, it poisons the person and they will not survive. Others have said it will appear suddenly out of the sand of the desert, quickly wrapping around it’s victim, choking it, then eating it’s prey whole. In folklore, it is also said that they can generate electrical shocks to stun their victims. What Do You Think? Michigan Dog Man

Michigan Dog Man Humanoid Creature This creature is said to have a man’s body with the head of a dog. It is about 7' tall. Many times it is spotted in car headlights, as it’s said to jump in front of cars. It is also known to peek in windows at night. It’s howl is said to sound like a human scream which draws people out to see who is in need of help, only to find this creature. The first sighting of the Dog Man was in Wexford County in 1887, when a couple of lumberjacks reported seeing a doglike man. Since then there has been reports along the Muskegon River and in Allegan and Manistee counties. Facts & Trivia There was a song recorded and played on a radio station in Traverse, Michigan, on April 1st in 1987 about the Dog Man legend. Though it was just meant to be a funny prank, many calls to the station followed from people who have had Dog Man sightings.  Lusca Giant Octopus The Lusca is said to be a sea creature in Caribbean folklore. Legend states that this creature lives in the region of the blue holes nearby Andros, an island in the Bahamas. People describe the Lusca as a octopus shaped supernatural creature that can take the form of a person’s worst fears. Some see it as a dragon, an octopus, a shark or cuttlefish. Some legends say that it can look like an animal of many body parts from different animals. It has been reported to be up to 250 long. Facts & Trivia The reality of this creature was cemented in the minds of people when a massive decomposing body was discovered on Anastasia Beach, in St. Augustine, Florida in 1896, which looked like a gigantic octopus. Loch Ness Monster

  Loch Ness Monster Nessie The Loch Ness Monster is said to be a sea creature that has been sited many times in Loch Ness in Scotland. The earliest reports of the Loch Ness Monster were reported in the 6th century. The legend continued in 1933, when a couple reported seeing the creature again. Since then, there have been many sightings. It is speculated that the creature being seen might be a plesiosaur, an extinct marine reptile that resembles the descriptions of the creature with a long neck. Many believe it could also be a misidentification of an eel or large sturgeon. Nessie Facts & Trivia Loch Ness is the largest lake in Scotland by volume. Loch Ness is so deep at is 230 meters that it never freezes over, even in the winter. The first recorded sighting of the Loch Ness Monster, was in 565 AD by St Columba. The most popular photo that people think of when thinking of the Loch Ness Monster was proven to be a hoax.

Jersey Devil

Jersey Devil Leeds Devil A creature that has been described as a winged bipedal horse and said to be spotted in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It is said to live in the Pine Barrens in South Jersey. It’s described as horse-like creature that stands on it’s back legs and has wings. It is said to have a kangaroo or horse-like head, horns, bat-like wings and cloven toes. The folklore started when a woman named Marry from Estellville, was pregnant and not feeling well, so she cursed the baby and said, “let it be the devil”. The story goes that when the baby was born it had horns, wings and hooves and flew out the chimney into the Pinelands. Now it is said that it roams the marshes at night and lets out loud screams to keep humans away. Champ

  Champ The Lake Champlain Monster Champ is said to be a sea creature that has been spotted in Lake Champlain in Vermont. Sightings of this sea serpent have gone back to at least the 1800's and possibly before. The Abenaki and the Iroquois people that lived near Lake Champlain, told stories about a large creature living in the lake, which they explained as a large horned serpent. The Abenaki Indigenous people called this creature a Gitaskog and would warn people to stay away from the lake and not disturb the monster in it. Many people believe that Champ might be a zeuglodon, a long, snake-like ancestor of our modern whale, while others believe it is some sort of supernatural creature. Others believe that Champ is a garfish, large sturgeon or a large eel that is being misidentified. He is said to have a foul odor like decaying meat or sulfur. Some report that this creature is brown, gray, tan and black. Before a sighting people say the woods they are walking in will fall silent.
